Volunteers

The Cotswold Listener has over fifty volunteers who carry out a range of tasks including administration, news editing, news reading, magazine presenting, sound recording, and copying the recordings to send to the listeners.

We produce an edition of the Cotswold Listener – which typically includes a local news section followed by a magazine section – fifty-one weeks of the year, with volunteers working in small teams to produce each section.

There are four magazine teams: each team comprises two presenters and a sound recorder, and records once every four weeks. Magazine teams usually record on a Monday or Tuesday afternoon.

There are eight news teams: each team comprises four readers including a team leader, a news editor, and a sound recorder. News teams records once every eight weeks on a Wednesday afternoon or evening depending on the team.

Recording sessions typically take around 90 minutes.

The Charity is managed and administered by a governing body – the Committee – whose members are the Trustees. Meet our Trustees and Admin Team here.

The Trustees have the ultimate responsibility for directing the affairs of the Charity and ensuring that it is solvent, well-run and delivering its objectives.

There are two main types of Trustee – the three Officers, who are elected by the membership annually at the AGM in the role of:

  • Chair of the Trustees
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary to the Trustees

In addition, there is a Listener Trustee elected by the Listeners to represent their interests.

There are co-opted Trustees who are invited by the Officers to carry out a specific role or who have expertise useful for the running of the Charity for a stated period (generally a year and can be extended).

Trustees’ names are registered with the Charity Commission, and the Charity Commission expects trustees to take their responsibilities seriously – while recognising that they are volunteers and may make honest mistakes.

Trustees are not expected to be perfect – they are expected to do their best to comply with their duties.

We are always looking for enthusiastic new volunteers who would like to offer us their skills.  Role Descriptions for all volunteer positions are available in the section above.

Our volunteers operate from our studio/office in 21 Rodney Road, Cheltenham, GL50 1HX, and/or from home, depending on the role.
